Fair Saturday 2018 - Bilbao and the Basque Country

November 20-25, 2018 — We invite you to immerse yourself in the Basque society through a special art festival: Fair Saturday. Welcome to this project that reflects the essence of the Basque society: a mix of generosity, innovation, art and open-mindedness.

Itinerary: November 20-25, 2018


DAY 1 Tuesday, November 20th — Discovering Bilbao and Fair Saturday

Today is the first day of your experience in the Basque Country. Welcome!

Arrival at La Paloma, the airport of Bilbao, designed by Santiago Calatrava Spanish architect, where your personal driver will welcome you. Transfer to Bilbao and check-in at your selected hotel 4* (availability of the room from 14:00). 16:00 Meet up at the reception of the hotel with your local host .

Walk to the Maritime Museum of Bilbao where you will travel through the history of the city, nowadays a UNESCO creative city. At the museum, be surprised by an Aurresku, a traditional Basque dance dedicated to guests of honour.

Presentation of the project by the Fair Saturday team that will share with you the philosophy of the movement while savouring a welcome drink at the museum. Afterwards, you will start exploring the city with your local host, taking part in a genuine Basque tradition: a pintxos tour.

Dinner: in the “siete calles” (seven streets) of the old quarter of Bilbao, where time seems to have stopped centuries ago, enjoy some pintxos (Basque Country tapas) while discovering the oldest buildings such as the Santiago Cathedral, the Arriaga theatre or the La Ribera Market.

DAY 2 Wednesday, November 21st — From the past to the future: exploring Bilbao

During this second day in Bilbao, we will accompany you along its most emblematic buildings and its historical streets, where the cultural events of Fair Saturday will take place. Come and enjoy it today like real Bilbaínos (inhabitants of Bilbao).


9:00 Meet up with your local host at the lobby of the hotel and discover the transformation of the city in a narrated walk. Your walk will include a stop for a coffee at the Azkuna Zentroa, now a cultural centre which has been built over the city’s old wine warehouse, the reason why it is called as well “Alhóndiga”. Discover the interesting contrast between the classic design of its exteriors and the avant-garde décor of the interior, designed by Philippe Starck.

After the walk, it is time to discover another symbol of the transformation of Bilbao, the Guggenheim Museum, designed by the architect Frank Gehry. Enjoy a private guided visit of this museum of modern art.

13:30 Lunch: to crown the day, savour a traditional menu in a charming restaurant in Bilbao city centre. The rest of the day is free to keep discover the city at your own rhythm.

DAY 3 Thursday, November 22nd — Basque traditions and Fair Saturday behind the scene

Today we invite you to discover the cradle of the Basque traditions in a small piece of paradise hidden between the sea and mountains – the Urdaibai biosphere reserve. To crown the day, you will be the guests of honour of the Fair Saturday dress rehearsal.

9:00 Meet up with your local host at the lobby of the hotel. Transfer in private coach to the Urdaibai biosphere reserve. Arrival in Gernika, famous for the painting by Picasso, where you will learn a little more about Basque History and traditions in its Casa de Juntas (General Assembly).

11:30 Transfer to a txakoli winery, where José Ángel will share with you the secrets of wine growing and the production of this traditional Basque white wine. The visit includes a wine tasting

Lunch: Savour local products paired with txakoli while admiring the amazing view from the winery. 16:00 It is time to return to Bilbao where the Fair Saturday team will welcome you at the Bilbao Arena.

During the dress rehearsal of the main event of the festival – with more than 200 artists interpreting local and international songs, you will discover the event from inside, interacting with the staff that will accompany your around the backstage, having access to some of the secrets of the event and sharing good music moments. All the benefits of the event will go to “Invisible barriers”, a patronage program for the social integration of kids at risk of cultural exclusion.

19:00 Transfer back to the hotel and rest of the day free at leisure.

DAY 4 Friday, November 23rd — San Sebastian and Fair Saturday opening event

Today you will discover San Sebastian, a beautiful city on the Basque coast, close to the French border, and a traditional place for the meeting of the aristocracy and currently a must for film lovers. In the evening, savour the Fair Saturday Opening Event as guests of honour of the festival.

9:00 Meet up with your local host at the lobby of the hotel. Transfer to San Sebastian by private bus. Enjoy a narrated walk with your guide who will tell you about the history of the city and its people while discovering its most emblematic streets. You will have time to visit San Telmo Museum, the oldest museum of the Basque Country dedicated to the evolution of the Basque society.

Lunch: Enjoy a traditional menu in a charming restaurant. 16:00 back to Bilbao in private bus and some free time

19:00 Meet up with your local host at the lobby of the hotel and transfer by private bus to the Fair Saturday Opening Event in Bilbao Arena. It is now time to enjoy the whole event you could start discovering yesterday. Are you ready for a good music moment? After enjoying the concert from VIP seats, you will savour a private catering and share time with the artists of the night.

Transfer back to the hotel by private coach.


DAY 5 Saturday, November 24th — Bilbao and Fair Saturday from the air and from the sea

Today it is Fair Saturday, a day to improve the world through arts and culture.


Discover what we have prepared for you and take time to enjoy the events on your own rhythm.

9:00 Meet up with your local host at the lobby of the hotel. This morning, you will discover the industrial past of the region in the lovely coastal city of Getxo and, among other interesting buildings, the Puente Vizcaya, the world's oldest transporter bridge and an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Private transfer to Bilbao. Live a unique moment at Torre Iberdrola in Bilbao, a smart building with a height of 165 metres, designed by Cesar Pelli and the only place in Bilbao with overview all over the city.

13:00 Enjoy from the 24th floor of the tower (only opened for private events) the chamber music concert “Music in the air” of the Sociedad Coral de Bilbao.

Lunch: on your own.

Rest of the afternoon at leisure. We suggest discovering some of the events of the afternoon. 20:00 Meet up with local host and transfer by private bus to the dinner place.


Dinner
: tonight you will be the guests of honour in a special place ―a txoko (gastronomic society), where only members are allowed and where they will cook for you as tradition dictates.


DAY 6 Sunday November 25th — Time to say good bye!

Our journey together ends here. Thanks for sharing with us these special moments around the Fair Saturday project. We hope that you have had a good time and that you take a little bit of us home with you.

Check-out from the hotel. Meet up with your local host. Share the last moments with your companions around a farewell breakfast. Private transfer to the airport.
